This book is about Matt's personal story of depression and anxiety. He wrote that depression and anxiety are our risk of being an intelligent human. It reminds my counseling session with a college student who had anxiety that rooted in her overthinking. Then, I said to her that the overthinking was a sign of intelligent people. Unfortunately, she was unaware of this mechanism. therefore the thought was out of control and overwhelming. It went in an undefined direction and confusing her.
As Matt's reflection, the thing we need to do is learn how to live with it conciously. We need to be more attentive to ourselves. He used mindfulness to help him to be an observant of his life. As my client is doing right now, she need to sit still, look, recognize, and aware of what are happening inside and outside herself. Then, accept it as her current ways of thinking and realize that this thought is only part of herself. She will realize that there is an essential self that could direct this thought to a certain direction we called as realistic direction that rooted in here and now reality.
By being mindful, the intelligent human are not only dreadful but also wonderful. Matt said that the wound is the place where the light enters you. As we being more sensitive to negative aspects of our live that lead to depression or anxiety, the sensitivity could help us to be more aware of many positives aspects in life that lead to our gratitude to anything simple in life.
This book also remind us in a glimpse about how crazy this world is so it is normal that people react with depression and anxiety. The world of competition, rushing, and consumerism is design to depress people. Matt wrote that to be calm becomes a kind of revolutionary act: to be happy with our own non-upgraded existence, be comfortable with our messy and human selves.
Well the reason to stay alive is life itself. The soulful simplicity life.
